CDSC Community Dialogue - Social Drivers of Online Hate - Registration Required
by Jeremy Foote 08 Sep '26

08 Sep '26

Greetings, Join the Community Data Science Collective<https://communitydata.science> (CDSC) for our next Science of Community Dialogue! This Community Dialogue will take place online on September 18th at 3:00 pm ET and will center around presentations by Dr. Joe Walther<https://www.comm.ucsb.edu/people/joe-walther> (UC Santa Barbara) and Dr. Dyuti Jha<https://sites.google.com/view/dyutijha/> (Fort Hays State University) will join us to discuss their research. Drs. Walther and Jha study the role of social processes in the production and dissemination of hate speech. Researchers have often treated those who engage in online hate as social deviants, enabled to act out by the affordances of online anonymity. Our speakers will discuss an emerging perspective that argues that those who engage in hate often do so for social approval, often as part of (anti)social organizations. A full description of the session is on our website at https://wiki.communitydata.science/Dialogues/Social_Drivers_of_Online_Hate. If you would like to attend the session, please register here<https://forms.gle/PdukicU17MhHupdo9>. Those who register will be sent a Zoom link for the meeting. What is a Dialogue? The Science of Community Dialogue Series<https://wiki.communitydata.science/Dialogues> is a series of conversations between researchers, experts, community organizers, and other people who are interested in how communities work, collaborate, and succeed. What is the CDSC?
