This online meeting will take place on September 30 at 12:00 ET (11:00 CT / 10:00 MT / 09:00 PT) and last two hours. This session's theme is the newcomer experience and informal learning featuring Dr. Denae Ford (Microsoft Research) and Regina Chen (University of Washington). Topics include:
* Learning in online communities: what are participant's needs and challenges? * Mentoring relationships among community members * Supporting learning in online communities * Inclusive and welcoming learning environments for programmers * Supporting newcomers in your community * Empowering community leaders to adopt practices that enable learning

What is a Dialogue?
The Science of Community Dialogue series is a series of conversations between researchers, experts, community organizers, and other people who are interested in how communities work, collaborate, and succeed. Over the two-hour Dialogue session we will have presentations from two researchers and time to discuss what their research means and how it can be applied to your own work.
What is the CDSC?
The Community Data Science Collective (CDSC) is an interdisciplinary research group made of up of faculty and students at the University of Washington Department of Communication, the Northwestern University Department of Communication Studies, the University of North Carolina School of Information and Library Science, the Carleton College Computer Science Department, and the Purdue University School of Communication.
